Hunter Longe
Longe's project reflects on the cyclical roles of life and death, highlighting how living organisms and fossilized remains shape geological materials like limestone and how biomineralization and organic decay on the farm contribute to an ongoing material recycling, blurring distinctions of what is living and non-living, biological and mineral. Presented here is the start of a two-year project investigating the process of erosion or “dissolution” of limestone (and of structures built in concrete derived from limestone), as well as the “self-healing” capacity of ancient Roman concrete, to make a series of evolving sculptures that are gradually dissolving or repairing themselves. The fossil remains of extinct marine life and the flow of water play a central role in these processes.
During the opening, Hunter Longe and sound artist Aio Frei will translate the movements of various geological materials as well as of the water in the surroundings of the farm into a multi-layered sound performance.” The installation and performance consider how the power structures of a society, much like its physical structures, might be subject to entropy and dissolution or repair, while also considering how remnants of the distant past, altered by these forces, continually influence the present.
