On the 7-inch of the multimedia edition «5'05" - 3 Notations of 1 Act of Cleaning a Piano» one can hear the artist, Franziska Koch, how she cleans her piano. As the title indicates, the act takes 5 minutes and 5 seconds. For the edition edited by Anna Frei, two musicians and one artist were invited to develop a renotation of this piece, which in turn can be the starting point for an interpretation.
Once a year, cleaning up the piano at Franziska Koch's house is recurring in spring cleaning. The piano is played in their living environment by young and old, spontaneous as passionate. In the resulting recording you can hear how the piano is cleaned, rubbed and wiped. Tapping sounds and occasional poking against the instrument body lend the piece its own rhythm, just as the wiping over the keys combine sounds into an abstract melody.
The recording was meticulously transcribed to the score by Sebastian Gottschick as a classical notation on two sound levels and appears as a Leporello. Marlon Schumacher's contribution developed over a (re) translation process by means of a computer program and the use of a noise database to a video file animated notation. A cursor running over the digital sheet of music directs two players to interpret the piece. Finally, in Romy Rüegger's set of maps, a meandering flow of text that incorporates the context of piano cleaning forms the translation of "5'05" ». From her typeface, which clings to sound phenomena, emerges a dense description, which sets the working conditions within the arts and housework in relation.
